What We Believe

The Upper Room lives for Jesus by knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus

The Bible

We believe the Old and New Testaments (herein referred to as the Bible) to be the inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, error free in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed.

Our God

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—co-eternal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in power and glory, having the same attributes and perfections.

The Person and Work of Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He did this so that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. We believe that Christ died on the cross taking the punishment and penalty for our sins by His shed blood, to save people from sin so they will belong to God and live with Him forever. We are assured of this by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead.  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He continues as a Mediator and High Priest between us and God.  We believe Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead, and to establish God’s righteous and good reign in the new heavens and earth.

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He makes spiritually dead sinners spiritually alive through the new birth, baptizing all believers into spiritual union with Christ, indwelling and sealing them until Christ’s return.

The Condition of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God. He is unable to remedy his lost condition by himself.

Salvation

We believe that salvation was accomplished for man through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and must be received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is by faith in Christ that people receive a right standing before God and eternal life.

Growing in Christ

We believe God’s work begun in the believer’s life through the new birth is continued in his life by the Holy Spirit, using such means as the Word of God, prayer, spiritual gifts, and fellowship, resulting in a transformed life. We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accordance with His own will.  We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God that is given to him.

The Church

We believe the church is the body of Christ, composed of all who are born again through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is expressed in gatherings for the worship of God, for learning from the Word of God, for prayer and fellowship.  We believe the sharing of the Gospel, taking of communion and water baptism as a scriptural means of testimony of the Church.  We believe that a local church is a self-governing body and must be free from interference by any governing body outside the local church or political authority.
